Orissa started their Ranji Trophy Super League Group-A campaign on a disappointing note when they lost to Madhya Pradesh by 118 runs on the penultimate day of the four-day match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. This was 63rd overall loss in 147 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and first in only match against Madhya Pradesh.
Electing to bat, under the captainship of stumper Chandrakant Pandit, Madhya Pradesh rode on a half-century each by Jai Prakash Yadav and Ashraf Raja Ali to compile a total of 275. Among successful Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty, captain Sanjay Raul and Subash Chandra Mohanty bagged three wickets each.
In reply, Orissa were bowled out for 156 and conceded a lead of 119 runs. Shiv Sundar Das was the top scorer with 40 runs. Rajesh Chauhan did maximum damage to the Orissa first-innings, capturing five wickets.
Orissa did well to restrict the second innings of Madhya Pradesh to 154. Raul pocketed five wickets in the second innings to finish with a match haul of eight for 76. Subash Mohanty was second most successful Orissa bowler, picking up three wickets again in the second innings.
Orissa, however, lost the match as they were bowled out for 155 in the second essay, while chasing a challenging target of 274. None of the Orissa batsmen could stay long enough to score a half-century.
